Recently, there was an incident at Denver International Airport that highlighted a growing concern in the service dog community - the misuse of service dog vests. As someone who is currently training Lyric to be a service dog and has experienced the responsibility firsthand, I feel compelled to shed light on this issue.
Training a service dog is no small feat. It requires dedication, time, and patience. From basic obedience to advanced tasks, a service dog must be well-prepared to assist its handler in various situations, especially amidst distractions. My previous service dog, Zotia, although not professionally trained, underwent rigorous puppy training. However, looking back, I now realize the importance of professional service dog training, especially in environments with high levels of stimuli.
The incident at the airport underscores the need for stricter regulations regarding service dog certification. While I understand that not everyone can afford professional training, there should be some form of evaluation or certification process to ensure that only legitimate service dogs are granted access. Simply slapping on a service dog vest for the sake of convenience undermines the integrity of service dog partnerships and can pose risks to both handlers and the public.
As I continue training Lyric, I am reminded of the privilege and responsibility that comes with having a service dog. It is my hope that through education and advocacy, we can ensure that service dogs are respected and recognized for their invaluable assistance to individuals with disabilities. Let us work towards a future where service dogs receive the recognition and support they truly deserve.
