As I reflect on the journey of PHAMALY Theatre Company, I am reminded of the incredible individuals who have been a part of this remarkable endeavor. One such individual is my dear friend and fellow actor, Stephen Hahn. Stephen’s presence on and off the stage has been a beacon of light, talent, and unwavering dedication. Now, as he nears his transition from this plane, I find myself filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the time we have shared and the memories we have created together.
Stephen joined PHAMALY for our very first show, Guys and Dolls. He came with a passion for performing that was both infectious and inspiring. His performances were marked by a unique blend of sensitivity, strength, and authenticity that captivated audiences and left a lasting impact. Whether he was taking on a leading role or supporting his fellow actors, Stephen brought an unmatched level of commitment and heart to every production.
Beyond his remarkable talent, Stephen’s kindness and generosity made him a cherished friend to all who knew him. He was always ready with a word of encouragement, a helping hand, or a heartfelt laugh that could brighten even the darkest days. His ability to connect with others, to see beyond the surface and embrace the person within, is a gift that has touched many lives, including mine.
The stories of our members are woven with threads of resilience, talent, and profound personal growth. Stephen’s journey with spina bifida and his struggle to accept his own disability is one that has inspired and moved many of us.
Stephen once confided in me, “I see past everyone else’s disability. Why can’t I accept myself the same way?” This poignant question captured the internal conflict that many people with disabilities face—the ability to embrace and support others while grappling with self-acceptance.
Early in his life, Stephen struggled to come to terms with his spina bifida. The physical challenges, societal misconceptions, and family doubts weighed heavily on him. Despite his ability to recognize and celebrate the strengths and talents of others with disabilities, he found it difficult to extend that same compassion and acceptance to himself.
Joining PHAMALY was a transformative step for Stephen. The theatre became a sanctuary where he could express himself freely and explore his talents without judgment. On stage, he was not defined by his disability but by his passion, skill, and dedication. Performing allowed Stephen to connect with a part of himself that was unencumbered by physical limitations—a part that could soar and inspire.
Shortly after I met Stephen he invited me to church with him. His strong Christian faith has been a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength, guidance, and a deep sense of purpose. His faith has not only shaped his personal journey but also influenced his approach to acting and his interactions within the PHAMALY Theatre Company. He often speaks of his belief in a higher purpose and the conviction that his life has a divine plan, which gives him the courage to face adversity with grace.
His faith is evident in the way he lives his life—always with a spirit of compassion, kindness, and humility. Stephen’s interactions with others are marked by a genuine concern for their well-being and a readiness to offer support and encouragement. He sees the beauty and worth in every individual, a reflection of his belief in the inherent dignity bestowed upon each person by God.
Stephen’s presence on stage was imbued with a quiet yet powerful confidence, rooted in his belief that he was fulfilling his divine calling.
Stephen’s faith also fostered a deep sense of community within PHAMALY. He is known for his ability to bring people together, creating an environment of mutual respect and understanding. His unwavering belief in the power of love and redemption is a source of inspiration for many, encouraging others to embrace their own faith and resilience.
Stephen’s strong Christian faith is not just a personal belief but a living testimony that touches the lives of everyone around him. It is reflected in his kindness, his dedication to his craft, and his unwavering support for his wife, friends, and colleagues. His faith provides a foundation of strength that enables him to overcome obstacles and shine brightly in every aspect of his life. As we face the reality of Stephen’s nearing transition, it is a time of both sorrow and celebration. Sorrow, because we will miss his physical presence, his voice, and his vibrant spirit that has been an integral part of our PHAMALY family. Celebration, because Stephen’s life is a testament to the power of art, friendship, and resilience. His journey with PHAMALY is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do—to create spaces where every voice is heard, every story is told, and every individual is celebrated for who they are.
Stephen’s legacy within PHAMALY is profound. He has shown us that true artistry transcends physical limitations, that the most powerful performances come from the heart, and that the bonds we forge through shared passion are unbreakable. As he prepares to embark on his next journey, we hold on to the memories, the lessons, and the love that he has generously shared with us.
In honoring Stephen, we reaffirm our commitment to the values he embodied: authenticity, compassion, and faith. His spirit will continue to inspire us, to guide us, and to remind us of the profound impact that one person can have on a community.
Stephen, my dear friend, as you transition from this plane, know that you have left an indelible mark on our hearts and on the stage of life. Your light will continue to shine brightly in the memories we cherish and the stories we tell. Thank you for sharing your extraordinary journey with us. You will always be a part of PHAMALY, and your legacy will live on in every performance, every laugh, and every heartfelt moment we create together.
